Don’t judge a face by a vape

Exploring stereotypes and expectations surrounding women, this work reinterprets Kitagawa Utamaro’s ukiyo-e print "Woman Exhaling Smoke from a Pipe" through a contemporary lens. Replacing the traditional smoking pipe with a vape, the work draws a parallel between historical and modern representations of femininity.

女性に対するステレオタイプや社会的な期待をテーマに、喜多川歌麿の浮世絵「煙管持てる女」を現代的な視点から再解釈した作品です。伝統的な煙管を現代の電子タバコに置き換えることで、過去と現代における女性の表象やジェンダーに対するイメージの共通点を浮かび上がらせています。
